Breaking Design Norms with Intention

At KMI, we believe true design thrives in thoughtful details and delightful departures from the norm. Discover how we infuse unique character into every space, from ceilings to unexpected views.

The KMI Approach: Designing with Purposeful Deviation

For KMI, "unexpected" doesn't mean arbitrary. It means thoughtfully reimagining how elements function and contribute to a space's overall narrative. These design deviations are vital because they:

  • Create Unique Identity: They ensure a home feels distinct and personally tailored.

  • Enhance Sensory Experience: They invite closer inspection, adding visual and textural intrigue.

  • Solve Design Challenges: They offer innovative solutions for light, flow, or focal points.

  • Elevate the Everyday: They transform mundane areas into moments of beauty and conversation.

Wallpaper on the Ceiling - Powder Room #FeelinFrench

In the intimate confines of a powder room, we often seek to create a jewel-box effect. For our #FeelinFrench project, we looked up – literally. Applying a captivating wallpaper to the ceiling transformed this small space into an immersive experience. This unexpected "fifth wall" draws the eye upward, adding dramatic depth and a luxurious, enveloping feel that is both sophisticated and utterly charming.

TV in a corner rather than centered on the wall #SoParSoGood & #ItsAllInTheDetails

In many homes, the television dictates the room's layout, becoming an unintentional focal point. In our #SoParSoGood and #ItsAllInTheDetails projects, we intentionally designed the family room for connection and gathering first. The television was thoughtfully placed in a corner, with the wall behind it designed to help it blend seamlessly. This subtle shift allows the room's true centerpiece – a captivating piece of art or the conversation area – to shine, encouraging minds to explore freely and fostering genuine family interaction.

Windows on Interior Walls #HugsAllAround

Challenging the notion that windows belong only on exterior walls, in our #HugsAllAround project, we integrated windows into interior walls. This innovative approach serves multiple purposes: it allows natural light to filter into deeper, often darker, interior spaces, creating a brighter and more open feel. Beyond functionality, these interior windows add architectural interest, create visual connections between rooms, and offer unexpected glimpses, fostering a sense of warmth and connectivity throughout the home.
